Do You Need a Referral to See a Physiotherapist in Ontario?
One of the most common questions we hear is whether you need a doctor’s referral before booking physiotherapy. In Ontario, the short answer is no — but there’s one nuance worth knowing.
Physiotherapists are primary healthcare providers
In Ontario, physiotherapists, chiropractors and Registered Massage Therapists are considered primary healthcare providers. That means you have ‘direct access’ — you can book an appointment directly, without a referral, and be assessed and treated right away.
The one exception: insurance reimbursement
While you don’t need a referral to be seen, some extended-health insurance plans require a physician’s referral before they’ll reimburse treatment. It’s always worth a quick check of your policy so there are no surprises — and we’re happy to help you confirm.
Why direct access is good for you
- You can start treatment sooner — early care often means faster recovery
- No waiting for a doctor’s appointment first
- Fewer barriers between you and pain relief
